FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know before, during and after your appointment

Your hair should be around 5–10 mm long so the wax can properly grip and remove it from the root.

If you normally shave, allow approximately 2–3 weeks of growth before your appointment, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

If the hair is too short, the wax may not be able to grip it properly, which can result in an incomplete wax.

No, not if you want the best waxing results.

Waxing removes the hair from the root, while shaving only cuts the hair at skin level. Shaving between appointments interrupts your natural hair-growth cycle and means different hairs can be at different stages when you return for your next wax.

Staying consistent with waxing allows us to remove the hair from the root each time. With regular waxing, many clients notice that their hair gradually becomes finer, softer and less dense

Most clients come every 4–6 weeks, depending on their individual hair-growth cycle and the area being waxed.

For the most consistent results, we recommend maintaining a regular waxing schedule.

Waxing removes the hair from the root, so some discomfort is normal. How much you feel it depends on the area, your hair type, your individual sensitivity and whether it is your first wax.

The first few appointments can feel more intense. With regular waxing, many clients find that it becomes easier as the hair becomes finer.

Tip: Avoid caffeine before your appointment if possible. Caffeine can increase sensitivity and make the treatment feel more intense. This includes coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout and other caffeinated products.

Waxing removes the hair from the root and also removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This is why your skin feels particularly smooth and soft after your treatment.

  • Make sure your hair is long enough to wax.
  • If you have been shaving, allow around 2–3 weeks of growth.
  • Arrive with clean skin.
  • Avoid heavy oils, body butter or thick creams on the area before your appointment.
  • Avoid caffeine before your appointment if possible.
  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Let us know if you use any medication or skincare products that may affect your skin.

Some medications and active skincare products can make your skin more sensitive, fragile or more prone to skin lifting during waxing. This can make waxing unsafe, even if your skin looks completely normal.

This can include:

  • Isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane)
  • Retinoids and retinoid creams, including tretinoin
  • Prescription retinoids
  • AHA/BHA and other strong exfoliating acids
  • Certain acne medications
  • Certain antibiotics or medications that increase skin sensitivity
  • Medications that affect the skin or its ability to heal

Depending on the medication, dosage, treatment area and when you last used it, waxing may need to be postponed.

Not sure if your medication or skincare is compatible with waxing? Send us a message before booking and we will check with you whether the treatment is possible.

Never stop prescribed medication in order to have a waxing treatment. If in doubt, speak to your doctor or pharmacist as well.

Waxing during pregnancy is generally possible, but hormonal changes can make your skin more sensitive and the treatment may feel different or more intense.

After giving birth, we recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before waxing. Your body and skin need time to heal, and the treatment area must be completely healed before waxing.

If you have had stitches, tearing, a C-section or any other healing wound, please wait until the area is fully healed before booking.

If you are unsure whether you are ready to wax after giving birth, please contact us before booking.

Yes. You can still have your wax during your period.

For intimate waxing, please wear a tampon or menstrual cup. Your skin may also be more sensitive during your period, so the treatment can feel slightly more intense.

For the first 24 hours, avoid anything that creates excessive heat, sweat, friction or irritation on the waxed area.

This includes:

  • Sexual activity / intimacy
  • Sauna and steam rooms
  • Hot baths and very hot showers
  • Intense exercise
  • Swimming
  • Sun exposure
  • Tight clothing or underwear that causes friction

Freshly waxed skin is more sensitive, so giving it time to settle helps reduce irritation, bumps and inflammation.

Wait approximately 48 hours before exfoliating.

After that, regular gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and can reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.

We recommend our WAX QUEEN Exfoliating Cloth for gentle regular exfoliation. You can also use the Italwax Ingrown Hair Therapy Lotion as part of your aftercare routine.

Ingrown hairs cannot always be completely prevented, but consistent aftercare can significantly reduce the risk.

Exfoliate regularly
Use our WAX QUEEN Exfoliating Cloth to gently remove dead skin cells and help keep the skin clear.

Use an ingrown hair treatment
The Italwax Ingrown Hair Therapy Lotion can be used as part of your aftercare routine to help prevent and treat ingrown hairs.

Don’t pick or squeeze
Picking at ingrown hairs can cause inflammation, pigmentation and potentially infection.

Small red bumps immediately after waxing can be a normal reaction. The skin and hair follicles have been stimulated during the treatment and this usually settles within a few hours.

You may also notice small white or pimple-like bumps after waxing. These can occur when bacteria enter the freshly opened hair follicles, particularly if the area has been exposed to heat, sweat, friction, touching or aftercare that was not fully followed.

To help prevent this:

  • Keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary touching.
  • Avoid heat, sweating, swimming and friction for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid tight clothing or underwear that rubs against the area.
  • Follow the recommended aftercare.
  • Wait around 48 hours before exfoliating.
  • Once the skin has recovered, use regular gentle exfoliation to help keep the follicles clear.

These bumps will usually settle on their own. Do not squeeze or pick them, as this can cause further irritation, inflammation or pigmentation.

If the bumps become increasingly painful, swollen, widespread or do not improve, please seek medical advice.

Waxing should not be performed on skin that is sunburned, irritated, broken, peeling or otherwise compromised.

Waxing may also not be possible if you are using certain medications or skincare products that affect the skin, including isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane), tretinoin, prescription retinoids, strong exfoliating acids and certain acne medications or other medications that increase skin sensitivity or affect healing.

If you are unsure whether your skin, medication or skincare is suitable for waxing, please send us a message before booking. We are happy to check with you whether the treatment is possible.

Yes. Ideally, book your wax 1–2 days before your holiday rather than immediately before sunbathing, swimming or spending a lot of time in heat.

This gives your skin time to settle before exposure to sun, chlorine, salt water and friction.

We kindly ask you to cancel or reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance.

When you book an appointment, we reserve that specific time exclusively for you. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows leave us with too little time to offer the appointment to another client.

For cancellations made less than 24 hours before your appointment, or in case of a no-show, 100% of the booked treatment will be charged.

This policy allows us to respect both our clients’ time and our working schedule.

After one no-show, you will no longer be able to book a new appointment at WAX QUEEN.
